The light of a house is extremely important, as light is a vital element in our existence. When we need artificial light, the means of providing it are imperative and they must be adjusted to the environment. Every room of the house must have a particular light in terms of intensity and duration: kitchen, living room and bedroom, each has a different type of light: warm, cold, intense, mild, pale etc.
If the offer in the stores does not satisfy your expectations and you simply cannot find anything on your taste, you should try and make a lamp shade that will provide your place a shade of originality and will express your taste and personality in the best way.
If during summer, in general we avoid artificial light sources, when it is over and the days are smaller, we are obliged to take urgent measures that can also be according to the budget.
In the beginning, let us see what materials are required:
- A paper lampshade (like the ones from Ikea, but there can be found in most DIY stores);
- Colored wallpaper or paper which must be a little thicker than usual (the wallpaper can be chosen according to your own preferences);
- Patterns that can be butterfly, floral, abstract, or which way you decide;
- eraser (you'll see why).
After you have all the needed materials at hand, all you have to do is start your creative handy work, step by step.
First of all, carefully open the lampshade and let the cable loose, in order to be able to glue the patterns in a correct way.
The patterns that you will stick to the lamp shade will be made by you, as well. If you go for butterflies, you can crop them in different sizes and place them all on one side of the shade, as if they all came at once out of nowhere and leave a few more a bit further, as if they are catching up, of remained last; this studied “imbalance” will give more originality to the item, and will confer a sort of depth of plans, as if the item itself it is a world-within-a-world and the butterflies are real.
Make a research on butterfly (or whatever you desire) patterns, print and cut out the pattern and start copying them on the table; then draw them on the wallpaper or colored paper.
Drawing the wallpaper and cutting into shapes seems like a quick and easy step, but because the traces of pencil can be seen on the inside of the wings of butterflies, it is time to use the eraser and clean out all the unwanted traces that can be a very disturbing eyesore on an item that was meant to be really aesthetic and delicate. So pay a lot of attention to such details that can be upsetting.
We run the butterfly wings, or flower petals, or whatever you have decided as a main pattern, and bend them slightly outward, towards the center of the pattern before you place the glue on one side and we place them on the lamp shade.
And so - drawn, cut, revamped, stuck – stick them to the shade and everything is finished.
Every time you set your eyes on your hand-made lamp shade, you will get overwhelmed with delight over your own decoration masterpiece. And your friends will also be delighted and they will probably feel inspired and ask you to create a personalized lamp shade form them, as well.
