Depending on the number of plants you want to have in your apartment or house, the solution that you want to adopt can differ from house to house. For example, fitting a Yucca plant as a sole natural, organic element into a minimalist interior is a good idea and it can also be meant to contrast with the almost sterile environment. However, one plant will not have a significant influence on the quality of the air and will not change the parameters of the internal temperature so its existence will barely represent more than a decision of aesthetics.
Instead, a person opting for a fitting slightly bohemian atmosphere, with inserts of floral designs with a larger number of bodies of furniture and of course, with more plants, will require a demonstration of ingenuity when designing space: light must be suitable, providing each plant the amount that it needs; the room temperature must also be maintained at the parameters indicated according to the plants’ needs – it is required a proper airflow, hence a good ventilation of such space, according to the considerable size of plants etc.
If you are a person who loves plants and you want to always have them around, then you will probably be tempted to always acquire one. If you plan a trip every four months in an exotic country, you discover many plants from each location that you will want to have at home ... well, try to resist the temptation and not bring them all to you in home. You risk overcrowded space and will not be able to breathe when you go to bed or you sweat just sitting on the couch and looking at television. Plants, like any living thing, sweat. If a certain type of plants you purify the air, then many others - in large numbers, can become stifling, and you get to live in a greenhouse.
You thought that you can meet the challenge and in time, you have gathered dozens of plants in the apartment. Inevitably, you witnessed the process by which your life has become a nightmare. Instead of coveted relaxation after a day of work, when you go home you are forced to water the plants, remove dust and clean them of dead leaves. The job might take even several hours. And If you do not get to admire the beauty of the flowers that will add to the general aspect of your home, then what is the point?
As long as you don’t overreact with purchasing too many plants, you can go on enjoying the existing plants in the apartment. Here are some tips:
Do not forget that there are plants that can make you relax not only due to their appearance, but also because their exceptional characteristics. Herbs are extremely beneficial in any space. Their growth and use in the interior should be encouraged, but few people appreciate the qualities of these plants. In addition to their uses in the kitchen – such as basil, Cherry tomatoes, rosemary, tarragon, etc. - they are undemanding plants when it comes to care and surprising in terms of aesthetics.
You can also choose Lavender, due to its qualities. It is a plant that takes you in a state of tranquility due to its delicate fragrance. Often used in herbal medicine, it can help you get rid of insomnia, depression, anxiety, migraine etc. For this reason I recommend you to place a Lavender pot in the bedroom or living room.
As for the space dedicated to your work, you can opt for a lemon tree. It grows as a shrub, not taller than 30 cm, and remains green throughout the year. Its growth requirements are ideal for an office. Located somewhere within the room, not in the direct beam of light, it will not be distinguished by a special appearance, but its flowers will perfume the area with a particularly vibrant fragrance. Its yellow fruits will always be a source of energy, a topic of conversation, and you will be positively influenced by its discrete presence, overall.
If you're still willing to invest in ornamentals, why not make them practical and useful? Choose for living a number of plants that purify the air, such as ficus, dracaena, Sansevieria trifasciata - or snake plant, Hedera Helix - The English ivy etc.
If you do not want to lose too much time taking care of plants, you can opt anytime for modern landscaping with plants that do not require any soil - it may represent the element of surprise in your personal area, for example the transparent pots that can hang right above the dining table, as a natural chandelier – known as terrariums, or can be incorporated into various decorative objects. Such plants can brighten any decor - and is poorly lit or very small.
You can also create a decorative wall plant. All slopes used in this case will be grouped in one area and will benefit from the same irrigation system; it does not require much natural light - the light needed can be provided by an artificial source. With the help of various species that can grow in these conditions - must have a proper root development in a vertical plane - you can create various designs and geometries that personalize the space and to surprise anyone who visits you. Surely this element, so pronounced, will be the focus of your arrangement.
However, the plant is a living being. So no matter what your preference of choice might be, I suggest you consider the needs of the plant first and foremost, if you want it to live and delight your sight; make sure you will be able to care for it and help it develop over time. Can a shrub look good in an apartment when you buy it and is still undeveloped, but in two years there won’t be enough room for its leafy crown and you discover you have to give up on it, or plant it in the garden – but what if you don’t have a garden, or the area is not proper for its species?
Plants can be your source of happiness, especially if you have pets or a large family. But they may represent a source of stress if you are not prepared to take care of them. In this case think carefully and try to find a way to integrate them into your life and your home without letting their normal development dominate your activities, or you limiting them.
Find a solution either alone or with the help of an interior designer, the advantage that they will determine you to return home happy, thinking of your little oasis of happiness.
