Modern style became popular between the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Modernism is characterized by the refusal to use straight lines and angles, preferring wavy lines inspired by natural forms, such as the shape of plants, flowers etc.
This style has multiple names. For example, in the US they call "tiffani" after American designer L.C. Tiffani; in France is known as "Art Nouveau"; in Germany - "Jugendstil", named after the magazine Die Jugend that was popular in that era; in Austria - "Vienna Secession"; in Italy it was called "liberty" style; in Spain - "modernism" and the list goes on.
Modern style is characterized by rounded, asymmetrical and wavy lines. Modernist painters used vegetable ornaments as a basis for their work. One of the emblems of modern style is represented by the embroidery of the German artist Hermann Obrist - a large tapestry with plant motives.
Japanese culture has had a remarkable influence on the development of Modern style. Also, many Modernist artists have been inspired by the cultures of other long gone civilizations, such as ancient Egypt, for example.
The color palette featured in the Modern style of decorating and landscaping consists of pastel shades of gray, the color of smoke, ashes, geraniums, blue-gray, shades of brown, etc.
The contrasts are obtained using colors red, blue and green. Starting from this rule, you can choose the base color of your house. For example, the walls of the living room can be dressed in a smoky gray wallpaper and then use red drapes for contrast.
Designers choose to introduce modern decorating style geometric elements, especially the circle and oval that may be present in the shape of tables, a ceiling, a photo frame or a vase. All this can be decorated with discrete and refined floral patterns.
Another feature of Modern style is adorning the ceiling with carved plaster elements or, more recently, polystyrene: rods, rosettes, fake galleries for drapes and curtains etc.
The floor must be covered with flooring or decking. The simplicity of this type of floor is just right to balance the look full of ornaments and decorations of the room adorned in Modern style.
The modern style furniture
When choosing furniture to complete the frame of the Modern style chosen for your house, you must consider the following details: sofas must be upholstered in floral or monochrome covers, and the whole ensemble of furniture (chests, tables, cupboards, windows etc. ) must be rounded, and slightly curved.
Nowadays, Modern style was adapted to the demands of the times and respite from undulating forms and curves, adopting lines and right angles. But still retains its original grace by using combinations of good quality wood or veneer with etched glass.
The right accessories are slightly glossy: mirrors in special frames, shiny curtains mounted on chrome galleries, iridescent wallpaper with gold or silver shades etc.
Note that the iris flower is the symbol of Modernism, often found in homes that are furnished in modern style in different forms. So do not hesitate to use it as a basic element if you decide to decorate your house in Modern style. You can purchase a wallpaper printed with iris patterns; if you won’t find one on your taste, or at all, go for paintings representing this flower, a lamp or a floor lamp that recalls the shape of the iris and other elements that remember or evoque the iris.
